Elementary iPad Pilot Begins

Teaching Staff in the School District of the Menomonie Area grades 3-5 received 5 iPad Mini's at the start of the 2013-2014 school year.  The intent of this pilot is to incorporate technology tools into daily practice with a focus on student collaboration.  The posts and comments that will follow below are how staff have, or plan to incorporate the devices into their classrooms.

  1. Good Morning,

I am just writing to check in with everyone on the IPad Mini adventures in my world. I have discovered some great apps for Grade 5, I think.

Thought I'd share this link to TWO WRITING TEACHERS. I know you probably have your routines in place for the year with Daily 5, but you might find this interesting. It is an article that uses the App Evernote in Writer's Workshop!

I also discovered a great free mathematical thinking app called "5 Dice." It is developed by a teacher named Justin Holladay. He also offers a course for teachers to create their own apps, at http://teachercreatedapps.com/.
Here are more games that he created, just haven't had time to look into them at all.
5 Dice: Order of Operations Game
    Grid Lines: Ordered Pair Game
Ordered Fractions: Comparing & Ordering Fractions
    4 Dice: Fraction Games
    Tangram Chess

I also like another free math app called "Thinking Blocks: Model and Solve Word Problems. Kids have to think about the parts of word problems and build models that will help them to solve them.
